The Paraelemental Plane of Sand

The Paraelemental Plane of Sand, within the confines of the Inner Planar Region is a plane where earth and air fuse together to create an endless desert defined by two dominant elements: sand and wind. This landscape is marked by towering dunes, some reaching mountainous heights, and vast stretches of hard, flat sand. The wind's influence is profound, shaping the terrain into ever-changing patterns. In certain areas, the sand behaves uniquely, flowing like rivers between the dunes and flatlands, creating a dynamic and ever-evolving environment. Here, the cycle of light and darkness resembles day and night, but with a unique twist. Instead of a sun, it's the very sky that radiates light. During the day, this sky-wide luminosity provides a diffuse radiance over the endless desert landscape. As night approaches, this glow gradually fades, plunging the plane into a soft darkness.

This plane is a harsh and unforgiving environment. Water is exceedingly rare, with any existing water being temporary, brought from outside sources. This scarcity poses a significant challenge to planar travelers, as the intense daytime heat can lead to rapid dehydration. At night, temperatures plummet below freezing, adding another layer of danger. The wind, a defining feature of this plane, can be perilous, capable of whipping up sand tornadoes and massive sandstorms that obscure vision and alter the landscape for extended periods, further challenging the survival of visitors.

This plane does not lack inhabitants however. There are creatures well adapted to the harsh environment. Most of them are hostile to planar travelers, like land sharks, sand giants, sand elementals and sand worms. However, humanoids also exist, primarily consisting of planar travelers who have lost their way or individuals exiled here as punishment. Many of these humanoids lead nomadic lifestyles, constantly moving across the vast deserts. Others have formed more permanent settlements, constructing large cities out of the plane's hardest sand.
