The Astral Plane is the plane that connects every single plane and demiplane in the multiverse, except for the Godrift, so it is the best way for a planar traveler to move around. The plane itself looks like a vat endless sky of dark silvery colors, dotted with innumerable points of light. These points of light are actually the color pools, the planar doorways to other planes. Besides that, the plane is mostly empty, the few matter that exists here has arrived from other planes. This plane has no gravity, and movement is by thought. non-living objects cannot move and will then endlessly drift across the vast emptiness, unless pushed. The plane is also timeless, this means that, even though time moves, it's effects don't apply to creatures on this plane. Creatures do not age, wounds are not cured (unless by magical means) and living creatures do not need to eat or drink. This timelessness can be both a blessing and a curse. A creature can subsist eternally on the astral plane. But the main problem is that all the effects of time retroactively apply to any creature or object as soon as it leaves the plane. So a creature that spends more than his life span on the astral plane, at his return will suddenly get decay and die of old age.
There are two distinct methods for entering the Astral Plane: by projecting oneself into the astral plane or by doing a physical entry. Astral projection involves leaving the physical body behind, which then enters a state of temporal stasis, immune to the needs of sleep, food, or drink. However, upon returning to the body, the effects of time apply retroactively. While in the Astral Plane through projection, the traveler exists in an astral form, an incorporeal reflection of their physical self. When in astral form one is still linked to the body via the silver cord. This silver cord is a lifeline, physically manifesting as a faint, silver line that extends from the astral form. It stretches a few feet behind before blending seamlessly into the astral medium. This form of traveling is relatively safe as if the astral form is slain by any means, it immediately ends the projection and the traveler returns to it's body. The only way of effectively killing an astral projected traveler is by either killing it's physical body, or by severing its silver cord.
Physically entering the Astral Plane, through means such as gates or plane shift spells, is the other form of entering the astral plane. This allows a creature to bring its body and carried items into this realm. Unlike astral projection, this method does not create an astral form; the traveler's physical presence is transported directly. The timeless nature of the Astral Plane still applies, meaning that the effects of time are suspended during the stay but apply retroactively once the creature exits the plane.
The vast emptiness is paradoxically populated by both transient visitors and permanent inhabitants. Due to its role as a nexus between planar realms and as a common destination for failed planar travel, the plane sees a significant number of visitors, and permanent settlers. Additionally, the plane is home to monstruous creatures that roam the expanses in search of prey.
